Kenya vs Tanzania Safari

Both are world-class. Here's the honest, side-by-side breakdown our Nairobi planners share with every traveller deciding between Kenya and Tanzania for their first African safari.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration

The short answer

Pick Kenya if you want the iconic Mara River crossings, easier logistics, lower park fees, and a great-value beach combo. Pick Tanzania if you want the densest wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater, more pristine wilderness in the southern and western Serengeti, or you've always wanted to summit Kilimanjaro. Pick both — most of our luxury travellers do a 10–14 day cross-border itinerary that links the Mara and Serengeti.

The Great Migration, decoded

The migration is one herd of 1.5 million wildebeest moving on a year-round loop between the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Maasai Mara (Kenya). The famous crocodile-and-river crossings happen at the Mara River from roughly July through October — that's the Kenya window. The calving season, when half a million babies are born in a few weeks, happens in the southern Serengeti from late January to mid-March — that's the Tanzania window.

Cost reality

Tanzania is typically 15–25% more expensive than Kenya at every tier, driven mostly by higher park fees (Ngorongoro alone is currently around $295 per person per day) and longer driving distances or required internal flights. Kenya is the better value for first-time safari-goers; Tanzania rewards travellers who want to spend more time in fewer, wilder places.
